SOFT HOUSE COMPANY

Soft House Company was a seminal project in the Italian house scene, born in Bologna around 1990 and today considered one of the most representative acts of the first wave of house music in Italy. The project arose from the meeting between DJ and producer Claudio “Moz-Art” Rispoli and musician Francesco “Kekko” Montefiori, two key figures in the Italian electronic and clubbing scene of the 1980s and 1990s, also active in the orbit of IRMA Records and the nascent European dance music culture.
The group quickly established itself with the single “What You Need” (1990), which became a cult hit in clubs in Chicago, London, and across Europe, helping define the sound of melodic and refined Italian house of the time. The track, characterized by a mix of deep groove, piano house, and soulful influences, is still considered one of the most iconic productions of the golden age of ’90s house. Alongside this success, the project also released “…A Little Piano,” confirming the duo’s sonic identity: a balance between club energy and a more sophisticated musical sensibility, with great attention to harmonic construction and atmosphere. The project also fit into the broader creative context of the Bologna and Italian scene of the time, an extremely fertile environment that contributed to the birth of numerous innovative projects linked to house, funk, and electronica, many of which orbited around the musical vision of Irma Records.
